Estimated tuition here is the school’s published per-credit rate times the credits it states, before fees. It’s the fairest way to compare programs that bill in different units. Here are the most affordable online DSW programs, in order.

  • University of Alabama: $19,800. $440 per credit hour across 45 credits, with fees on top. You finish two years of coursework, then a capstone that typically takes a year. Alabama runs an Advanced Clinical Practice track and an Organizational Leadership track, and requires three years of post-MSW experience and no GRE.
  • University at Buffalo: $31,200 for New York residents. $800 per credit for 39 credits, the shortest program on this list. Your capstone runs four semesters, implementing and evaluating an intervention inside your own agency.
  • University of Kentucky: $33,180. $790 per credit for every online student, plus a $10 per-credit distance fee, across 42 credits. It holds CSWE candidacy and offers five tracks, from clinical social work to sport social work.
  • Millersville University: $33,312 for Pennsylvania residents. $694 per credit for 48 credits in 2025-26. It’s the only DSW here that pays graduate assistants a stipend.
  • Barry University: $35,000. $700 per credit (the 2024-25 rate) for 50 credits, with a trauma-informed leadership and practice focus and a weekly live class on Wednesday evenings.

All six are public universities except Barry. Four of them come in under $35,000, and every one costs far less than USC’s $97,524 estimate.

What Online DSW Tuition Really Covers

A per-credit rate is only part of your bill. The fine print varies a lot:

  • Rates that include fees. Kansas quotes $995 per credit hour including fees. Kutztown folds a $40 technology fee into its $768 rate.
  • Rates with fees on top. Alabama’s $440 excludes fees. Walden adds a $185 program fee each quarter, Walla Walla a $162 general fee each quarter, and Tulane a $60 per-credit academic support fee (capped at $536) plus $100 a semester for technology. Buffalo’s full rate with fees is $966.16 per credit for New York residents.
  • Caps. Capella charges $1,020 per quarter credit for coursework and $3,060 per quarter during the capstone, but Capella caps total tuition at $45,000. That cap, not the per-credit math, sets its estimate, which is why Capella ranks tenth here despite 71 quarter credits.
  • Rate years. Barry’s figure is a 2024-25 rate and Millersville’s is 2025-26. Expect newer years to cost a bit more.

Does a Low Price Mean a Weaker Program?

Not by the measures you can check. Accreditation doesn’t follow price: Walden, one of four DSWs CSWE accredits, sits ninth of 16 at $43,070, while USC, the most expensive, holds candidacy rather than accreditation. Kentucky, the third most affordable, is also in candidacy. Seven of the 16 programs hold a CSWE status, two accredited and five in candidacy.

CSWE only began accepting practice doctorate applications in 2025, and it advises that a program’s accredited status shouldn’t be the deciding factor in where you apply for now. The CSWE-accredited DSW programs page explains what candidacy does and doesn’t promise.

What does differ with price is format. The lowest-cost programs lean on capstones tied to your own work: Buffalo’s agency intervention, Alabama’s intervention, thesis or journal-manuscript options, and Kentucky’s capstone built into coursework. Tulane’s higher price buys monthly live classes and projects aimed at peer-reviewed publication.

Costs Beyond Tuition: Travel, Time and Pace

Some low sticker prices come with trips. Alabama requires four days on campus in the first June and five in the second, plus a capstone presentation. California Baptist holds two four-day intensives a year, and Walla Walla two week-long residencies. Kutztown brings you to campus for a weekend at the start of every term. Budget airfare and lodging if you live far away.

Others keep you home. Walden and Capella run virtual residencies, and Kansas meets live online every other Saturday. Kentucky offers an asynchronous alternative to its residency week.

Pace changes cost too. Nine of the 16 offer a part-time path, which spreads payments out but can raise fees billed per term. Walden runs from as few as 21 months up to 8 years; Capella runs 3.5 to 4.5 years.

Ways to Pay Less for a DSW

DSWs are professional degrees, and none of the 38 on this site offers full funding. The real levers are these:

  • Assistantships. Millersville pays full-time graduate assistants a $6,000 annual stipend plus 18 credits of tuition waiver, and part-time assistants $3,000 plus 9 credits.
  • Tuition caps. Capella caps total tuition at $45,000, so a slow capstone doesn’t keep adding to your bill.
  • Residency. If you live in New York or Pennsylvania, Buffalo, Millersville and Kutztown charge you far less.
  • Fewer credits. Buffalo’s 39 credits and Kansas’s and Kentucky’s 42 keep totals down even at mid-range rates.
  • A funded PhD instead. If you’re open to research, a fully funded PhD in social work pays you to study. CSWE doesn’t accredit PhDs, and they take longer, but 46 PhD programs list funding.

Is an Affordable DSW Worth It?

It depends on what you want the degree to do. A DSW isn’t what qualifies you for clinical practice; the Bureau of Labor Statistics says clinical social workers need a master’s degree, supervised clinical experience and a state license. For context, the median social worker earned $61,780 in May 2025, so a $19,800 doctorate and a $97,524 doctorate ask very different things of that paycheck.

An affordable DSW makes the most sense if you:

  • want to teach practice courses, since many schools hire DSW graduates as practice faculty;
  • lead or plan to lead an agency and want doctoral training in leadership and evaluation;
  • are a seasoned clinician who wants advanced training and a credential for supervision roles.

How to Choose an Affordable Online DSW

  • Start with your estimate, then add fees. Alabama’s $440 excludes fees; Kansas’s $995 includes them.
  • Check whether your state changes the rate. Buffalo’s out-of-state rate is $1,148 against $800 for residents.
  • Count the trips. Alabama, California Baptist, Walla Walla and Kutztown require campus time; Walden, Capella and Kansas don’t.
  • Match the capstone to your job. Buffalo and Alabama build the project around an intervention you can run at work.
