What Is a Doctor of Social Work (DSW)?

What Is a Doctor of Social Work?

A Doctor of Social Work (DSW) is a practice doctorate for experienced MSWs who want to lead, teach or advance clinical practice, rather than run research full time. 38 DSW programs at 37 U.S. schools were verified in October 2026: 29 are online, most finish in two to three years, and 29 end in a capstone project instead of a dissertation. See them all on the DSW programs page.

What a Doctor of Social Work Degree Is

A Doctor of Social Work is the top practice degree in social work. You earn it after an MSW and several years in the field, and you use it to get better at the work itself: leading an agency, supervising clinicians, teaching practice courses or designing and testing new interventions.

CSWE describes practice doctorate programs as preparing “practitioner-scholars” to advance practice and innovate at the micro, mezzo or macro level, in higher education or in professional leadership. That phrase is the heart of the DSW. You still read and use research, but you apply it to a real problem instead of building a career around producing it.

The degree is growing but still small. IPEDS counted 220 practice doctorates and 666 research doctorates awarded in social work in 2022-23. Some schools call the degree a Doctorate in Social Welfare (Adelphi), a Doctor of Clinical Social Work (Penn) or a Doctor of Social Innovation (USC). All sit in the same practice-doctorate family.

How a DSW Differs From an MSW and a PhD

The social work degree ladder runs from the BSW to the MSW to a doctorate. The MSW is the license degree: BLS says clinical social workers typically need one, plus supervised experience after graduation. The doctorate comes after, and it splits into two paths.

DSW (practice doctorate) PhD in social work (research doctorate)
Programs verified 38 77
Online programs 29 8
Part-time option stated 20 20
Median credits 48 51
Final project Capstone in 29 programs Dissertation in 69 programs
State full funding Not typical 46 programs
CSWE accreditation 4 accredited, 11 in candidacy or pre-candidacy Not accredited by CSWE
Typical goal Lead, teach practice, advance clinical work Research and tenure-track faculty

The short version: a DSW fits a working professional who wants a doctorate without leaving the job, and a PhD fits someone ready to train as a full-time researcher, usually with tuition covered. The full comparison is in DSW vs PhD in social work, and the DSW or PhD quiz sorts your goals in a few questions.

What You Study in a DSW Program

DSW programs share a core of advanced practice theory, leadership, applied research methods, ethics and teaching. Beyond that, schools pick a focus. Across the 38 programs, 24 offer a leadership or administration focus, 23 a clinical focus, 17 a teaching focus, 9 a policy focus and 5 a research focus. Many offer more than one.

Some examples of what that looks like:

How Long a DSW Takes

The median DSW asks for 48 credits, and most finish in two to three years while you keep working. The range is wide:

  • Fewer credits: Morgan State asks for 36 credits over 3 years, and the University at Buffalo for 39 credit hours over 7 part-time semesters.
  • Fast schedules: Walden lists as few as 21 months, and Tulane runs a 30-month program over six semesters.
  • Longer schedules: Capella lists 71 quarter credits over 3.5 to 4.5 years, and Loma Linda 79 quarter units over about 11 quarters.

Quarter credits and semester credits aren’t the same size, so compare years and courses, not raw credit counts. The DSW length guide breaks timelines down program by program.

Doctorate in Social Work Online: How the Formats Work

Twenty-nine of the 38 DSWs are online, five are hybrid and five are on campus. Online is the norm because most students are working professionals. Still, most online programs ask for some live time:

  • Fully remote: the University of Louisville requires no campus residency. Yeshiva holds evening classes in a live Zoom classroom with no in-person attendance required.
  • Virtual residencies: Walden holds one virtual residency, and Capella two intensive virtual residencies.
  • Short campus visits: Alabama asks for 4 days on campus in the first June and 5 in the second. Penn holds a five-day immersion in Philadelphia and a four-day residency in year two.
  • Regular campus time: Rutgers holds nine onsite weekend residencies and two online residencies a year. Maryland meets one weekend a month in Baltimore.

If travel or a fixed weekly time slot is a dealbreaker, check the residency line first. The online DSW programs page lists every format detail.

Capstone Instead of a Dissertation

Thirty-one DSW programs end in a capstone or applied project. That’s the clearest structural difference from a PhD. A capstone tackles a practice problem and produces something usable, and many are built to be published:

  • The University at Buffalo runs a four-semester capstone that implements and evaluates an intervention in your own agency.
  • Rutgers asks for a portfolio of a case study, a qualitative research project and a multimedia project in place of a dissertation.
  • NYU asks for two publishable papers and a conference presentation.
  • Tulane requires applied practice projects published or under review at a peer-reviewed journal.

A few DSWs still require a dissertation, including Millersville, Kutztown and St Thomas’s banded dissertation of three linked works.

DSW Admission Requirements

Expect four things:

  • An MSW, almost always from a CSWE-accredited program.
  • Post-MSW experience: usually two or three years. Loma Linda asks for four, and Monmouth for three to five.
  • A minimum GPA: often 3.0. Barry asks for 3.5, and Rutgers for 3.6 in graduate work, with an explanatory statement accepted below that.
  • A license, at some schools: NYU requires an LMSW or equivalent and strongly prefers an LCSW. Rutgers requires an LSW. Yeshiva requires professional licensure. Others, such as Kansas and Morgan State, prefer a license but don’t require one.

Thirteen programs state that you don’t need the GRE, and none of the 38 states a GRE requirement. The DSW requirements guide has the full list.

What a DSW Costs

Nineteen DSWs publish enough to estimate tuition, meaning the published per-credit rate times credits, before fees. The median estimate is $45,000.

Program Rate Credits Estimated tuition
University of Alabama $440 per credit 45 $19,800
University at Buffalo $800 per credit, New York residents 39 $31,200
University of Kentucky $790 per credit 42 $33,180
Walden University $730 per quarter credit 59 $43,070
Tulane University $1,478 per credit 56 $82,768
USC $2,322 per unit 42 $97,524

Fees can change the picture. Walden adds a $185 program fee each quarter, and Capella caps tuition at $45,000. The DSW cost guide and the DSW cost calculator help you price a program with fees included.

Full funding is a PhD feature: 46 PhD programs state it. DSW students mostly pay tuition themselves.

CSWE Accreditation for DSW Programs

CSWE now accredits social work practice doctorates. It piloted DSW accreditation from 2021 to 2025, began accepting applications in August 2025 and applies standards that took effect August 1, 2025. CSWE does not accredit PhDs.

Because the process is new, only 4 DSWs are accredited: Tulane, Walden, Penn and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Eleven more are in candidacy or pre-candidacy, including USC, Rutgers, Kentucky and Capella. A program not yet on the list isn’t a weak program; it may not have applied. Track status on the CSWE-accredited DSW programs page.

What a DSW Leads to

A DSW doesn’t change your license. Clinical practice needs state licensure, which BLS ties to the MSW and supervised experience, not to a doctorate. What the DSW adds is depth and a credential for roles that reward it:

  • Teaching: BLS says faculty at four-year colleges typically need a PhD or other doctorate. Many schools hire DSW graduates to teach practice courses and lead field education. Tenure-track research jobs still lean toward the PhD.
  • Leadership: agency directors, clinical directors and program administrators use the DSW to lead evaluation, quality improvement and organizational change.
  • Advanced practice and supervision: clinical DSWs sharpen supervision and evidence-based practice for senior clinicians.

Whether that pays off depends on your goal and the price you pay. The DSW careers guide covers each path, and is a DSW worth it weighs cost against outcomes.

Who a DSW Suits Best

A DSW makes the most sense if these describe you:

  • You already have an MSW and a few years of practice. Most programs want two or three years after the MSW, and the coursework assumes you bring real cases and real organizations to class.
  • You want to keep working. Twenty programs state a part-time option, and schedules like Kansas’s alternate Saturdays or Barry’s Wednesday-evening class are built around a full-time job.
  • Your goal is practice, leadership or teaching practice. If you want to run a clinical department, direct an agency or teach practice courses, the DSW’s applied capstone fits. If you want to win research grants and earn tenure at a research university, a funded PhD is the stronger route.
  • You can pay for it. Estimated tuition runs from $19,800 at Alabama to $97,524 at USC, so price matters more here than with a funded PhD.

If two or more of these don’t fit, try the program matcher or compare PhD in social work programs before you apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a DSW a Real Doctorate?

Yes. The DSW is a doctoral degree, and CSWE now accredits social work practice doctorates under standards that took effect August 1, 2025.

Can You Get a DSW Without an MSW?

Rarely. Nearly every program asks for an MSW from a CSWE-accredited school. A few are flexible: California Baptist accepts related master's degrees such as the MPA, MPH and MPP, and Illinois accepts an MSW or master's equivalent.

What Is the Difference Between a DSW and an LCSW?

A DSW is an academic degree; an LCSW is a state license. BLS says becoming a licensed clinical social worker requires an MSW from an accredited program plus supervised clinical experience after graduation. A DSW doesn't replace that license, and some DSWs, such as Yeshiva's clinical program, require you to hold one.

How Many Schools Award the DSW?

38 DSW and practice doctorate programs at 37 schools in 19 states were verified in October 2026. Three more are not admitting yet: Illinois starts in 2027-28, UT Arlington in spring and summer 2027, and Nebraska Omaha has announced its program.

Are DSW Programs Funded Like PhDs?

Generally not. 46 of the 77 PhD programs state full funding, while DSW students usually pay tuition. Millersville is an exception worth knowing: its full-time graduate assistants earn a $6,000 annual stipend and 18 credits of tuition waiver.

Do You Need the GRE for a DSW?

Usually not. 13 DSW programs state they don't require the GRE, including Barry, Kentucky, Walden, Rutgers and Morgan State, and none of the 38 states a GRE requirement.
