Admissions
DSW Admission Requirements: MSW, Experience, License and the GRE
What Do You Need to Get Into a DSW Program?
DSW requirements come down to three things at almost every school: a master's in social work from a CSWE-accredited program, at least two years of post-MSW practice, and a graduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. Licensure is required at a handful of clinical programs, such as Rutgers and Yeshiva, and preferred at several more. No DSW in this comparison requires the GRE.

Almost every Doctor of Social Work program asks for the same core package: an MSW, a few years of real practice after it, and a solid graduate GPA. The differences sit in the details. Some schools want four or five years of experience instead of two. A handful of clinical programs require a license before you start. GPA floors run from 3.0 up to 3.6. And the GRE has disappeared from DSW admissions entirely.
This guide compares the stated admission rules of the DSW programs on this site, in each school’s own words, so you can see where you already qualify.
DSW Requirements Start With an MSW From a CSWE-Accredited Program
The MSW is the gate. Nearly every DSW lists “MSW from a CSWE-accredited program” as its first requirement, and CSWE itself describes practice doctorates as programs that educate master’s-level social workers who graduated from CSWE-accredited programs. If you’re still on the master’s step, start by comparing MSW programs.
A few programs open the door wider:
- California Baptist University accepts an MSW or a related master’s such as an MPA, MPH, MPP or several psychology master’s.
- Monmouth University prefers a master’s in social work or social services. Applicants with other social science master’s complete four core MSW courses before entry.
- University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign accepts an MSW or a master’s equivalent from an accredited institution.
- USC’s Doctor of Social Innovation asks for a master’s degree from an accredited institution or its global equivalent. It is a practice doctorate, not a DSW by name.
If your master’s is in counseling or public health, those programs are your realistic shortlist. Everywhere else, plan on the MSW.
GPA Floors Range From 3.0 to 3.6
Most programs set a 3.0 minimum in graduate coursework. The stricter ones:
| Program | Stated GPA minimum |
|---|---|
| Rutgers University DSW | 3.6 graduate GPA (explanatory statement accepted below it) |
| Barry University DSW | 3.50 MSW GPA |
| Florida Atlantic University DSW | 3.5 |
| NYU clinical DSW | 3.5 graduate GPA |
| Tulane University DSW | 3.3 in undergraduate and graduate study |
| Spalding University DSW | 3.3 MSW GPA |
| Morgan State University DSW | 3.2 |
| Walla Walla University DSW | 3.2 MSW GPA |
The University of Kentucky sets a 3.0 floor and says 3.5 is strongly encouraged. If your MSW GPA sits near 3.0, apply where the floor is 3.0 and let your practice record carry the application.
How Many Years of Experience Do You Need for a DSW?
Two years after the MSW is the most common rule. Of the DSW programs that state a number, 32 in total, the median requirement is two years. Several schools ask for three, and a few ask for more.
| Years after the MSW | Programs that ask for it |
|---|---|
| 2 years | Barry, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Capella, St. Thomas, Walden, Rutgers, Adelphi, Buffalo, Millersville, Kutztown, Memphis, Walla Walla |
| 3 years | Alabama, USC, Southern Connecticut State, Florida Atlantic, Kansas, Tulane, Morgan State, Penn, Tennessee, Yeshiva |
| 4 years | Loma Linda |
| 3 to 5 years | Monmouth |
Simmons University currently asks for three years of relevant post-MSW work and accepts two years as of January 2027. If you’re a year short, that change may decide your start date.
What Counts as Experience
The wording matters as much as the number. Kansas accepts “clinical or macro practice experience beyond the master’s degree.” USC asks for post-MSW experience “particularly in supervisory or management roles,” which suits agency leaders. Tennessee’s DSW in Clinical Practice and Leadership asks for clinical practice specifically, and Yeshiva wants supervised post-MSW clinical experience while you’re currently working in social services or a related field. Maryland asks for direct practice. Read the phrase, not just the year count, before you apply.
Do You Need a Social Work License for a DSW?
Most DSWs don’t require one. Clinical programs are the exception, and they fall into three groups.
License required:
- Rutgers requires the LSW and prefers the LCSW.
- NYU requires the LMSW or an equivalent, with an LCSW or equivalent strongly preferred.
- Yeshiva requires professional licensure.
- Loma Linda requires a clinical license or documented progress toward one.
- Florida Atlantic accepts a current license, license eligibility or registration as a social work intern.
- Buffalo asks for active licensure, certification or registration where you practice, if applicable, and a waiver may be requested.
- Alabama expects a current license for its Advanced Clinical Practice Track only.
License preferred: Kansas, Morgan State (clinical licensure), and Maryland (the LCSW-C or a comparable license).
License not required: UT Arlington states that no license is required and encourages licensure.
A DSW doesn’t license you. CSWE notes that licensure belongs to a board in each state government, separate from accreditation, and ASWB runs the national exams. If your goal is independent clinical practice, the LCSW is the credential that gets you there; a clinical DSW deepens practice and supervision on top of it. See clinical DSW programs for programs built around that path.
Is the GRE Required for a DSW?
No DSW in this comparison requires it. Thirteen DSW program pages say outright that the GRE isn’t needed, including Alabama, Barry, Kentucky, Morgan State, Rutgers, Buffalo, Capella (GRE and GMAT), Walden, Walla Walla, Penn, Memphis and UT Arlington. The rest simply leave tests out of their admission lists.
PhD admissions are less settled. Of the 77 PhD programs on this site, 26 state that the GRE is not required or can be waived, so check each PhD page before you book a test date. If you’re weighing both degrees, the DSW vs PhD comparison covers the full set of trade-offs.
DSW Admission Requirements by the Numbers
| What the DSW program pages say | Programs |
|---|---|
| Post-MSW practice asked for: 2 years | 17 |
| Post-MSW practice asked for: 3 years | 13 |
| Post-MSW practice asked for: 4 years | 1 |
| Post-MSW practice asked for: 5 or more years | 1 |
| MSW from a CSWE-accredited program named in the requirements | 29 |
| A social work license named in the requirements | 12 |
| GRE not required | 13 |
| GRE optional, waivable or required only in some cases | 0 |
| GRE required | 0 |

Schedule and Residency Requirements Once You’re Admitted
Admission rules tell you whether you get in. Residency rules tell you whether you can actually attend. Check these before you apply, because they decide your travel, time off work and the real cost of an online program.
| Program | What attendance requires |
|---|---|
| UT Arlington | No residency, no required weekly meetings, no campus visits |
| Louisville | No campus residency |
| Walden | One virtual residency |
| Kentucky | One synchronous Residency Week, with an asynchronous alternative |
| Barry | One 2-day hybrid event in year two, plus a weekly live class on Wednesday evenings |
| Alabama | On-campus residencies in early June: 4 days in year one, 5 days in year two |
| Tennessee | One week in Knoxville each of the first two summers, plus a three-day orientation |
| Tulane | Monthly weekend live classes, online or on campus |
| Maryland | In person one weekend a month, Friday to Sunday, in Baltimore |
| Rutgers | Nine onsite weekend residencies and two online residencies a year |
The pattern: online DSWs range from zero campus time to a week or more each summer, while campus programs like Rutgers and Maryland ask for a weekend a month. If you work a clinical caseload, ask your employer about those dates before you commit. For the full list of online options, see online DSW programs.
How DSW Admission Compares With PhD in Social Work Admission
The two doctorates screen for different things. A DSW asks whether you have the practice experience to advance the field from inside it. A PhD asks whether you can become an independent researcher.
That shows up in the rules. Every DSW that states a minimum asks for post-MSW practice, while PhD programs center on research preparation, and their testing rules vary more from school to school. The bigger difference is how you attend and pay: 46 of the 77 PhD programs on this site are funded, usually in exchange for full-time research or teaching work, while no DSW in this comparison is funded. See fully funded PhD programs in social work if a stipend matters more than keeping your job.
Programs Opening Soon and Rules That Are Changing
Three DSWs are starting later, and their published requirements tell you what to prepare now:
- UT Arlington starts its first cohorts in Spring and Summer 2027. It asks for an MSW or MSSW from a CSWE-accredited school and three or more years of post-MSW practice, with no license and no GRE required.
- University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign starts its first cohort in 2027-28. It asks for at least two years of relevant post-master’s work and a 3.0 graduate GPA.
- University of Nebraska at Omaha lists the DSW in its catalog, requires an MSW from a CSWE-accredited institution, and says admission details are coming soon.
What CSWE Status Means for Your Application
CSWE began accrediting practice doctorates recently. It piloted the process from 2021 to 2025 and began accepting applications from additional programs in August 2025. Four DSWs are accredited: Tulane, Walden, Penn and Tennessee. Eleven more are in candidacy or pre-candidacy, including USC, Capella, Rutgers and Kentucky.
CSWE’s own advice to applicants is direct: until accreditation is fully in place and every program has had a chance to seek it, a program’s accredited status should not be a deciding factor. Candidacy carries a real benefit too. If a program reaches initial accreditation, students who entered in or after its candidacy year count as graduates of an accredited program. The CSWE-accredited DSW programs page tracks every status.
How to Check Whether You Qualify
Work through this list against your own record:
- Your degree. An MSW from a CSWE-accredited program opens every door. A related master’s narrows you to schools like California Baptist, Monmouth and Illinois.
- Your years since the MSW. Two years qualifies you at 14 of the programs in the experience table. Three opens the rest except Loma Linda and Monmouth.
- The kind of work. Clinical programs such as Tennessee and Yeshiva ask for clinical practice, and Maryland asks for direct practice. Leadership programs such as USC and Illinois value supervisory and administrative roles.
- Your license. If you hold an LMSW or LSW, you clear the bar at NYU and Rutgers. Without one, most online DSWs remain open.
- Your GPA. Below 3.5, skip Rutgers, Barry, Florida Atlantic and NYU unless you can explain the gap.
- Your calendar. Match residency dates to your leave before you pay an application fee.
Then compare cost and length: what a DSW costs and how long a DSW takes. The program matcher filters by experience, format and focus in one pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Get a DSW Without an MSW?
At most schools, no. A few programs accept related master's degrees: California Baptist University lists the MPA, MPH, MPP and several psychology master's, and Monmouth University admits holders of other social science master's after they complete four core MSW courses before entry.
Can You Apply to a DSW Right After Your MSW?
Not to the programs in this comparison. Every DSW that states a minimum asks for post-MSW work, and the floor is two years. Monmouth asks for 3 to 5 years and Loma Linda asks for four.
Do DSW Programs Accept a Master's GPA Below 3.0?
The common floor is 3.0. Some set it higher: Rutgers lists 3.6, Barry 3.50, Florida Atlantic and NYU 3.5, Tulane and Spalding 3.3, Morgan State and Walla Walla 3.2. Rutgers accepts an explanatory statement from applicants below its threshold.
Does a Macro or Administrative Job Count as DSW Experience?
At many programs, yes. Kansas accepts clinical or macro practice, USC prefers experience in supervisory or management roles, and Illinois asks for relevant post-master's work. Clinical-track programs such as Yeshiva ask for supervised clinical experience.
Are DSW Requirements Easier Than PhD in Social Work Requirements?
They are different rather than easier. DSWs require post-MSW practice and no DSW in this comparison requires the GRE. PhD programs focus on research potential, and only 26 of the 77 on this site state that the GRE is not required or can be waived.
Do You Need a License to Finish a DSW?
Licensure rules for admission vary by program, and CSWE notes that licensure is set by a board in each state, separately from accreditation. A DSW does not license you to practice; your state board does.
