Online PhD in Social Work Programs
Which Online PhD in Social Work Programs Can You Earn From Home?
An online PhD in social work lets you take doctoral research courses by live video, usually with short campus visits, and 10 U.S. programs offer one fully or partly online. Baylor covers tuition and fees for up to five years, while Walden and Simmons charge per credit. Almost every program ends in a dissertation, and most expect about two years of post-MSW practice before you apply.

What an Online PhD in Social Work Actually Looks Like
An online PhD in social work is the same research degree as a campus PhD: advanced coursework in research methods, statistics and theory, a comprehensive or qualifying exam, and a dissertation. What changes is how you attend. Nearly every program here teaches through live (synchronous) video classes at set times, not self-paced modules, and most add a short stay on campus.
Ten programs fit this description. Eight are online (Norfolk State also offers campus study), and two are hybrid. Five of the ten allow part-time study, which is the main reason working social workers choose them. Which Online Programs Pay Your Way
Funding is rarer online than on campus, but it exists. Read each offer closely, because the terms vary a lot.
- Baylor University describes its program as fully funded: tuition and fees covered at 100% for up to five years. Stipends are possible through grant-funded research positions and adjunct teaching.
- University of Oklahoma offers up to four years of competitive funding with tuition, health insurance and a stipend. Its research assistant positions are limited and require 20 hours of work a week.
- West Virginia University makes full-time students eligible for teaching or research assistantships with a stipend and fall and spring tuition waivers, for 20 hours of work a week.
- Norfolk State University says assistantships with a stipend plus tuition may be available to full-time students, generally for three years.
- Our Lady of the Lake University pays teaching assistants $2,500 per course and adjunct instructors $3,000 per course after one year. That is paid teaching work, not a tuition package.
- Adelphi University considers every admitted student for a $16,600 scholarship.
Only Baylor’s offer covers tuition for every student. The others depend on competition or full-time enrollment. For campus programs that guarantee funding, see fully funded PhD in social work programs.

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed October 2026; a dash marks a detail the school's pages leave out. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times the stated credits, before fees, or the school's published program total; figures marked "general rate", "estimated rate" or "cost-of-attendance estimate" are the school's broader figures, not this program's own tuition. "Campus residencies" means an online or hybrid program with required in-person sessions. Admission shows the years of post-MSW practice the school asks for. CSWE status (DSW programs only) comes from CSWE's practice doctorate directory, captured September 30, 2026.
Live Classes and Campus Visits, Program by Program
“Online” covers a wide range of schedules. This table shows what each program asks of your calendar, in its own words.
| Program | How classes meet | Time on campus |
|---|---|---|
| Yeshiva University | Live virtual evening classes, Monday through Thursday; some courses asynchronous | |
| University of Oklahoma | Live Zoom classes in years one and two; later a mix of Zoom, asynchronous and face-to-face | Later years may include classroom sessions |
| Baylor University | Live video on Monday and/or Thursday evenings, 6-9 p.m. Central | One four- to five-day session in Waco before the first summer |
| Our Lady of the Lake | Synchronous and asynchronous courses in fall and spring | One-week summer residency in San Antonio ($550 fee with room and board) |
| Walden University | Online coursework | Four residencies (minimum 16 units), virtual or in person |
| Alabama A&M | Hybrid-synchronous classes every two weeks and weekly synchronous classes | |
| Adelphi University | Live online on Monday evenings | Five or six in-person days a semester, plus two summer classes |
| West Virginia University | Hybrid after year one; later stages can be done remotely | In person in year one, then six meetings a semester |
| Norfolk State University | Online and campus study | Final dissertation defense on the main campus |
A blank cell means the program lists no campus requirement in its format description.
If you can’t travel at all, Yeshiva, Walden and Oklahoma’s first two years come closest. If you work days, Baylor’s and Yeshiva’s evening sessions and Adelphi’s Monday nights are built for you. Note the time zones: Baylor’s 6 p.m. Central start is 4 p.m. on the West Coast.
Online PhD Tuition and Funding Compared
Only three online programs publish a per-credit rate for the PhD itself. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times credits, before fees.
| Program | Credits | Published price | Estimated tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walden University | 63 quarter credits of coursework, plus 20-130 dissertation credits | $680 per quarter hour | $42,840 for coursework |
| Simmons University | 45 credits | $1,265 per credit | $56,925 |
| Adelphi University | Three years of coursework | $1,740 per credit hour | Offset by a $16,600 scholarship for those who receive it |
Walden’s dissertation credits are billed at the same quarter-hour rate, so your final cost depends on how long the dissertation takes. Two schools publish only general rates rather than a PhD price. Yeshiva’s Wurzweiler School lists $1,400 per credit for its doctoral programs. Norfolk State’s university graduate rate for full-time study in 2026-27 is $4,937 a semester in-state and $11,523 out-of-state, before fees. Run your own numbers in the DSW cost calculator, which works for any per-credit doctorate.
Admission: Experience Rules Are Stricter Online
Online PhDs lean toward experienced practitioners. Six of the ten state a two- or three-year experience expectation:
- Firm: Oklahoma requires two years of full-time practice “with no exceptions.” Simmons requires at least two years of post-master’s experience. Our Lady of the Lake asks for two years after the MSW but may waive it.
- Preferred: Walden prefers three years of related experience. Norfolk State prefers two years of full-time, paid post-master’s practice.
- Encouraged: West Virginia encourages two years but doesn’t require them, and Yeshiva prefers experience without requiring it.
Most programs want an MSW from a CSWE-accredited school with at least a 3.0 GPA. Baylor, Simmons, Adelphi and Yeshiva will consider a related master’s. None of the four programs that state a test policy requires the GRE, though Baylor’s statistics exam and Norfolk State’s research and statistics course prerequisites do the same screening job.
How Long It Takes and What You Write
Plan on four to six years. Oklahoma typically takes 4 to 6 years, with a 7-year maximum. Simmons students finish in 4 to 6 years, including the defense. Baylor’s 10-semester curriculum runs about 4 years, and Our Lady of the Lake and Norfolk State are designed as four-year programs. Walden advertises as little as two and a half years but allows up to 8.
The dissertation format is shifting toward publishable articles, which helps if you want to teach:
- Three articles required: Oklahoma (a conceptual article, an empirical article and a practitioner-focused article), Baylor (three publishable articles within five chapters) and West Virginia (three articles for peer-reviewed journals plus an introduction and conclusion).
- Your choice: Simmons and Yeshiva accept either a traditional dissertation or three papers.
- Traditional: Walden, Alabama A&M, Adelphi and Norfolk State list a dissertation.
Online vs Campus PhD: The Trade-Offs
The online route keeps your salary, your license and your clinical caseload intact. That matters if you have a family or a job you don’t want to leave. The cost is in money and mentoring. Many campus programs, such as Tennessee and UNC, cover tuition and pay a yearly stipend, and they put you in a research office beside faculty every week. Online students usually pay tuition and build those relationships over video.
For a career in research-intensive universities, that daily contact and the funded research projects behind it are hard to replace. For teaching, agency research or evaluation roles near home, an online PhD can get you there without moving. Baylor is the rare program that offers both remote study and full tuition coverage.
Online PhD vs Online DSW
If your goal is advanced practice, supervision or agency leadership rather than research, an online DSW may fit better. DSWs are more often fully online, usually end in an applied capstone instead of a dissertation, and are the only social work doctorates CSWE accredits. The PhD is the stronger choice if you want to run original studies or compete for tenure-track faculty jobs. The DSW vs PhD comparison and the DSW or PhD quiz walk through the decision.
What the Degree Leads to
Most online PhD graduates teach, run research or lead evaluation. In May 2025, BLS counted 12,610 postsecondary social work teachers, with a median annual wage of $77,570. Walden lists concentrations in advanced clinical practice and supervision, social work administration, and social work education. Norfolk State focuses on family-centered practice and work with underserved populations.
The PhD doesn’t replace licensure. If you practice clinically, your state license, earned through supervised practice and an exam, still governs what you can do. See careers with a social work doctorate for pay by role.
How to Choose an Online Social Work PhD
- Check the live class times against your work schedule. Baylor meets Monday and/or Thursday evenings; Yeshiva meets Monday through Thursday evenings.
- Count the trips. Walden’s four residencies can be virtual; Baylor’s opening session and Our Lady of the Lake’s summer week are on campus.
- Find out who pays. Baylor covers tuition for up to five years. Oklahoma’s funding is competitive, and West Virginia’s and Norfolk State’s assistantships go to full-time students.
- Price the dissertation. At Walden, dissertation credits add to the $42,840 coursework estimate.
- Match your experience. Oklahoma’s two-year rule has no exceptions; West Virginia’s is only encouraged.
- Pick the dissertation format you want. Choose a three-article program if you plan to go on the academic job market.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is There a Fully Online PhD in Social Work With No Campus Visits?
Few programs are entirely remote. Yeshiva teaches through live virtual evening classes, and Oklahoma delivers its first two years synchronously over Zoom. Baylor requires one four- to five-day session in Waco, Our Lady of the Lake requires a one-week summer residency, and Walden requires four residencies that you can attend virtually or in person.
Are Online Social Work PhDs Respected?
Your diploma names the university, not the delivery format. Nine of the 10 programs end in a dissertation that faculty must approve, the same final step campus students face. For academic jobs, your publications and teaching record will matter more than whether your classes met online.
Can You Work Full Time During an Online PhD in Social Work?
Many students do. Yeshiva says most of its students finish in about six years, while full-time students not employed full time can finish in 3 to 4 years. West Virginia offers a five-year part-time plan alongside its four-year full-time plan. Assistantships at Oklahoma and West Virginia require 20 hours of work a week, so plan around that if you want funding.
Do Online PhD in Social Work Programs Require the GRE?
Walden, Simmons, Yeshiva and Baylor say the GRE is not required. Baylor instead requires you to pass its Garland School statistics exam with a B or better, and Norfolk State expects a completed graduate course in research and one in statistics.
Is an Online PhD in Social Work CSWE Accredited?
No PhD is. CSWE accredits baccalaureate, master's and practice doctorate programs, and research doctorates are not programmatically accredited. If CSWE accreditation matters to you, look at DSW programs, where CSWE now accredits some and lists others in candidacy.
