What Can You Do With a DSW? Careers and Pay
What Can You Do With a DSW?
What can you do with a DSW? Most graduates teach social work, lead human service agencies, or supervise and practice as advanced clinicians. BLS puts median pay at $77,570 for social work teachers and $80,390 for social and community service managers (May 2025). Clinical practice itself needs a social work license, not a doctorate; the DSW adds teaching, leadership and supervision skills on top.

What Can You Do With a DSW? Three Main Career Paths
A Doctor of Social Work prepares experienced social workers for three kinds of work. Each maps to an occupation the Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks, which lets you see real duties and real pay instead of guesses.
| Career path | BLS occupation | Workers employed | Median pay | Does it require a doctorate? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Social work professor or lecturer | Social work teachers, postsecondary | 12,610 | $77,570 | Usually, at 4-year schools |
| Agency director or program administrator | Social and community service managers | 209,330 | $80,390 | No |
| Advanced clinical or medical social worker | Healthcare social workers | 187,630 | $67,880 | No, a license is required |
| Clinical supervisor in mental health or substance use | Mental health and substance abuse social workers | 132,810 | $60,280 | No, a license is required |
Pay figures are the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics national medians for May 2025. Together these four occupations employ 542,380 people.
The table shows the honest shape of DSW careers. Only one of the four paths, teaching, usually expects a doctorate. In the other three, the DSW is a way to stand out, move up or deepen your skills, not a gate you must pass. Knowing which path you want tells you which kind of DSW to choose. If you are still deciding whether the degree is right at all, start with what a DSW is.
Teaching Social Work: Professor and Lecturer Roles
Teaching is the path where a doctorate matters most. BLS says postsecondary teachers at 4-year colleges and universities typically need a Ph.D. or other doctorate in their field, while community colleges may hire teachers with a master’s degree.
What the Job Involves
According to the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, postsecondary teachers:
- build a course outline or syllabus for each course they teach;
- plan lessons and assignments;
- teach courses in their subject area;
- grade assignments, papers and exams to assess student progress;
- advise students on which courses to take and how to reach their goals.
In social work programs, practice courses and field education draw directly on your years in the field. That is where DSW graduates fit naturally: many schools hire them to teach practice courses.
DSW or PhD for a Faculty Career?
The PhD is the traditional research route, and tenure-track research posts usually expect one. BLS notes that tenure may take up to 7 years of moving through the ranks of assistant, associate and full professor. If you want to run a research lab and win grants, a PhD fits better. If you want to teach future practitioners, a DSW with a teaching focus fits.
Programs built for teaching include Walden University’s DSW, which offers a Social Work Education focus, the University of Kentucky’s online DSW, which includes a Social Work Education track, the University of Kansas DSW with pedagogy and instruction in its curriculum, and UT Arlington’s new DSW in teaching and educational leadership, whose first cohorts start in spring and summer 2027.
Leading Agencies: Social and Community Service Managers
Management is the largest of the four paths, with 209,330 workers, and it has the highest pay ceiling. BLS describes these managers as people who coordinate and supervise programs and organizations that support public well-being.
What the Job Involves
BLS lists these core duties:
- work with community members and stakeholders to identify needed programs and services;
- oversee the administrative side of programs;
- analyze data to judge whether programs work;
- suggest and carry out improvements;
- plan and manage outreach;
- write proposals for social services funding.
Where the DSW Fits
You don’t need a doctorate to become a manager. BLS says most positions call for a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field, some require a master’s, and many managers first work as social workers or counselors. A DSW in leadership is one route to senior management. Many DSW capstones put you through the same work the duties above describe: at the University at Buffalo, for example, the capstone implements and evaluates an intervention in your own agency.
Leadership-focused programs include Spalding University’s DSW in Leadership in Community Practices, Monmouth University’s DSW in Human Rights Leadership and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign DSW in organizational administration and leadership. See them all on the DSW leadership programs page.
Advanced Clinical Practice and Supervision
Clinical work is where most social workers start, and it is where you need to be clearest about what a DSW does and doesn’t do.
BLS spells out the clinical license path: a master’s degree in social work from an accredited program, supervised clinical experience after graduation, and a passed clinical exam. A doctorate is not on that list. Your license, not your degree, decides whether you can diagnose and treat mental, behavioral and emotional problems.
What a Clinical DSW Adds
What a clinical DSW gives you is advanced practice and supervision training. That positions you to supervise newer clinicians working toward licensure, lead a clinical team, train staff in an intervention, or teach clinical courses as an adjunct or practice faculty member.
Some clinical DSWs expect you to be licensed already. Rutgers requires an LSW and prefers an LCSW, and Loma Linda University’s DSW in Clinical Leadership requires a clinical license or documented progress toward one. Penn’s Doctor of Clinical Social Work and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville DSW in Clinical Practice and Leadership are both CSWE-accredited. Compare every option on the clinical DSW programs list.
Where Clinical Social Workers Work
BLS lists child welfare and human service agencies, healthcare providers and schools among the main employers of social workers.
Pay in the Jobs DSW and PhD Graduates Hold
| Role | Jobs | Middle half earns | Median pay |

- Social work professor or lecturer: A doctorate is the usual requirement for tenure-track faculty roles; the PhD is the traditional research route, and many schools also hire DSW graduates to teach practice courses.
- Agency director or program administrator: Leadership roles don't require a doctorate; a DSW in leadership or administration is one route to senior management.
- Advanced clinical or medical social worker: Clinical practice requires licensure, not a doctorate; a clinical DSW deepens practice and supervision skills.
- Clinical supervisor in mental health or substance use: Supervisory and clinical roles require licensure; a clinical DSW adds advanced practice and supervision training.

DSW Salary: The Full Pay Range for Each Path
Medians tell only part of the story. The spread shows what you might earn as a new hire versus a senior leader in the same job. These are BLS figures for everyone in each occupation, at every degree level, from May 2025.
| Occupation | 10th percentile | 25th | Median | Mean | 75th | 90th |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Social work teachers, postsecondary | $48,200 | $61,170 | $77,570 | $83,940 | $100,400 | $126,790 |
| Social and community service managers | $53,150 | $64,290 | $80,390 | $88,880 | $103,200 | $132,260 |
| Healthcare social workers | $46,220 | $56,710 | $67,880 | $71,790 | $82,240 | $100,360 |
| Mental health and substance abuse social workers | $39,740 | $47,070 | $60,280 | $68,030 | $79,730 | $104,170 |
Three things stand out:
- Management has the highest ceiling. The top tenth of social and community service managers earn $132,260 or more.
- Teaching has a wide range. Social work teachers run from $48,200 at the 10th percentile to $126,790 at the 90th.
- Clinical pay tops out lower. Healthcare social workers reach $100,360 at the 90th percentile, and mental health and substance abuse social workers $104,170.
Pay alone shouldn’t drive your choice, but the table makes one point plain: a DSW pays most clearly when it moves you into teaching or management, not when you stay in the same clinical role.
Matching a DSW Program to Your Career Goal
DSW programs differ in ways that matter for each path. Of the 38 DSW and practice doctorate programs on this site, 29 are online and 29 end in a capstone project rather than a dissertation, which suits working professionals who want applied skills.
| If you want to | Look for | Example programs |
|---|---|---|
| Teach practice courses | A teaching or education track, CSWE status | Walden, Kutztown, Millersville |
| Lead an agency | A leadership track or an applied capstone in your agency | University at Buffalo, Spalding |
| Supervise clinicians | A clinical track and supervision coursework | Penn, University of Maryland |
| Do research full time | A funded PhD with a dissertation | Fully funded PhD programs |
The program matcher narrows the list to programs that fit your format, focus and budget.
DSW or PhD: Which Doctorate Fits Your Career?
Your career goal is the clearest way to choose between the two social work doctorates.
- Choose a DSW if you want to teach practice, lead an organization or supervise clinicians while you keep working. The degree is mostly online and capstone-based.
- Choose a PhD if you want a tenure-track research career. Of the 77 PhD programs on this site, 46 list funding such as stipends or tuition waivers, and 69 end in a dissertation.
CSWE accredits practice doctorates such as the DSW; research doctorates like the PhD aren’t programmatically accredited. Four DSWs are accredited and 11 are in candidacy or pre-candidacy, so check a program’s status on the CSWE-accredited DSW programs page if you plan to teach.
The DSW vs PhD guide compares the two in depth, and the DSW or PhD quiz gives you a quick recommendation.
How to Choose a DSW for the Career You Want
Use this checklist before you apply:
- Name the role. Teaching, management or clinical supervision. Each points to a different kind of program.
- Confirm whether you need the doctorate. Teaching at a 4-year school usually does; management and clinical practice don’t.
- Keep your license current if you work clinically. The DSW won’t replace it.
- Match the focus. Pick a program whose tracks name your goal, such as education, leadership or clinical practice.
- Check CSWE status if teaching is the goal.
- Weigh the cost against the pay. Estimated DSW tuition and pay vary widely; the DSW cost guide and is a DSW worth it guide set them side by side.
- Check admission requirements. Most programs want an MSW and post-MSW experience; the DSW requirements guide lists them program by program.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Be Called Doctor With a DSW?
Yes. The DSW is a doctoral degree, so you earn the title. In clinical work, though, your license is what authorizes you to practice, so keep it current alongside the degree.
Do You Need a DSW to Be a Clinical Social Worker?
No. BLS lists what a clinical license takes: a master's degree in social work from an accredited program, supervised clinical experience after graduation and a passed clinical exam. A DSW is optional for clinicians.
Can You Teach Full Time With a DSW?
Yes. Many schools hire DSW graduates to teach practice courses, and BLS notes that 4-year colleges typically want a Ph.D. or other doctorate. Tenure-track research posts more often go to PhD graduates.
What Is the Highest-Paying Job for a DSW Graduate?
Among the four occupations doctorate holders most often hold, social and community service managers have the highest median, $80,390, and the highest 90th percentile, $132,260 (BLS OEWS, May 2025). Social work teachers follow with a $77,570 median and a $126,790 90th percentile.
Is a DSW Worth It if You Already Have an LCSW?
It depends on your next move. If you want to stay in direct practice, your LCSW already covers it. If you want to supervise, teach or lead, a clinical or leadership DSW adds training for those roles. The DSW cost and value guide compares the prices.
How Many Social Work Doctorates Are Awarded Each Year?
IPEDS counts 220 practice doctorates and 666 research doctorates in social work awarded in 2022-23. The practice doctorate is the smaller of the two credentials.
