PhD in Social Work Programs

Which PhD in Social Work Programs Should You Consider?

A PhD in social work trains you to run original research and teach at the university level, and 77 U.S. schools offer one. Most are full-time campus programs, and many pay you to attend: Tennessee pays a $35,000 annual stipend plus tuition for four years. If you need to keep your job, a handful of online and part-time PhDs exist, and the DSW is the practice-focused alternative.

What a PhD in Social Work Trains You to Do

A PhD in social work is a research degree. You spend about two years in coursework on research design, statistics, theory and teaching, then pass a qualifying or comprehensive exam and write a dissertation that adds new knowledge to the field. The degree is built for people who want to study social problems and test interventions, usually as professors or research scientists.

That makes it different from the Doctor of Social Work (DSW), which trains experienced practitioners in advanced clinical work, supervision and leadership and usually ends in an applied capstone. Across U.S. schools, 666 research doctorates in social work were awarded in 2022-23, against 220 practice doctorates. If you’re still deciding between the two, the DSW or PhD quiz sorts you by goal in a few questions, and the DSW vs PhD comparison covers the trade-offs in depth.

How PhD Programs Differ: Funding, Format and Pace

Three facts separate one social work PhD from another more than anything else.

  • Who pays. Most research universities cover tuition and pay a stipend in exchange for research or teaching work. Some programs charge tuition and expect you to keep your job.
  • Where you study. Most programs are full-time and on campus. UNC Chapel Hill expects at least 40 hours a week during the academic year. A smaller group meets online or on a compressed schedule.
  • How fast you finish. Coursework usually takes two years. The dissertation takes another two or three, and part-time students take longer.

Funding and format are linked. The programs that pay the most are full-time campus programs that want you working beside faculty on funded research. The programs built for working professionals tend to charge tuition. Decide which side of that line you’re on before you compare schools.

77 programs

Program facts come from each school's own pages, reviewed October 2026; a dash marks a detail the school's pages leave out. Estimated tuition is the published per-credit rate times the stated credits, before fees, or the school's published program total; figures marked "general rate", "estimated rate" or "cost-of-attendance estimate" are the school's broader figures, not this program's own tuition. "Campus residencies" means an online or hybrid program with required in-person sessions. Admission shows the years of post-MSW practice the school asks for. CSWE status (DSW programs only) comes from CSWE's practice doctorate directory, captured September 30, 2026.

Funded PhD Programs and What They Pay

Among the 77 programs, 46 describe some form of financial support on their own pages. That ranges from guaranteed multi-year packages to competitive assistantships that only some students win. The table shows programs that publish a stipend figure, in the school’s own words. For the full list, see fully funded PhD in social work programs.

Program Published stipend What else is covered
WashU Base stipend of at least $37,853 for each of the first five years Full-tuition scholarship, professional development account
NYU $35,995.44 nine-month assistantship stipend Four-year fellowship with tuition and fee waivers, health and dental coverage
University of Tennessee, Knoxville $35,000 a year for four years Full tuition waiver, health insurance; 20 hours a week as a research assistant
University of Maryland $28,605 (10-month) or $34,325 (12-month) Tuition remission for fall and spring, health insurance
Loyola University Chicago Up to $28,000 a year, tied to 10 hours a week of faculty research Tuition waivers for three years, health insurance
UNC Chapel Hill $27,000 for appointed work Tuition and fees, health insurance, for at least four years
University at Buffalo $27,000 base, beginning fall 2027 Tuition for up to 47 credits; four-year assistantship
Florida State $21,450 a year for four years Tuition waiver and health insurance subsidy
University at Albany $18,000 a year (competitive) Tuition waiver for three years

Read the conditions, not just the number. Loyola’s stipend covers 10 hours of work a week, while Tennessee’s and Buffalo’s cover 20. Albany’s assistantship is competitive. Boston College describes its package as a doctoral fellowship valued at more than $250,000 over four years. If funding decides whether you can go at all, apply to programs that guarantee it to every admitted student.

When a PhD Charges Tuition

A few programs publish a per-credit price instead of a funding package. Estimated tuition below is the published per-credit rate times credits, before fees.

Program Format Published rate Estimated tuition
Walden University Online, four residencies $680 per quarter hour $42,840 for 63 coursework credits, before dissertation credits
Widener University Campus, Fridays only $1,020 per credit $55,080 for 54 credits
Simmons University Online $1,265 per credit $56,925 for 45 credits
Saint Louis University Campus $1,450 per credit $69,600 for 48 credits
NYU Campus $1,787 per point $85,776 for 48 points

Two of those prices rarely apply in full. Saint Louis says most doctoral students receive a full-time research assistantship or a tuition scholarship if they keep their job. NYU’s per-point rate applies to students not on its fellowship. Walden’s estimate covers coursework only; it adds 20 to 130 dissertation credits at the same rate. Smith College charges $40,970 a year for its first two years, plus $18,440 for the final summer.

Campus, Hybrid and Online Formats

Most social work PhDs expect you on campus, often on fixed weekdays. Alabama holds core courses on Mondays and Tuesdays in Tuscaloosa. Maryland meets in person on Thursdays and Fridays in Baltimore. South Carolina puts you in class two to three days a week for the first two years. UT Austin says plainly that it has no part-time or distance option.

A smaller group was built for people who can’t relocate:

  • Smith College runs a low-residency clinical PhD: three 10-week summers on campus, with clinical and research internships in between.
  • Adelphi University meets in person five or six days a semester and otherwise online on Monday evenings.
  • West Virginia University is in person in year one, then hybrid with six campus meetings a semester, and later stages can be done remotely.
  • Yeshiva, Oklahoma and Baylor teach through live video classes, and Baylor adds a four- to five-day session in Waco.

See online PhD in social work programs for each online program’s schedule and residency rules.

Admission Requirements: MSW, Experience and the GRE

Most programs want an MSW, but not all. Rutgers accepts a master’s in a related science field. CUNY lists public administration, criminal justice, psychology and education. Albany has applicants without an MSW take two master’s-level social work courses first, and Alabama and Buffalo offer combined MSW/PhD routes. If you need the MSW first, compare MSW programs first.

Practice experience matters more than many applicants expect:

  • Required: Oklahoma asks for two years of full-time practice “with no exceptions.” Tennessee requires post-master’s practice experience. CUNY asks for at least three years of post-master’s human services work.
  • Preferred: Connecticut, Howard, Kansas, Louisville and Maryland prefer about two years of post-MSW experience.
  • Optional: NYU doesn’t require practice experience but recommends three years. Alabama says experience is not required but strengthens an application.

The GRE is fading. Of the 77 programs, 26 say it isn’t required or can be waived. Fordham still requires it, and Florida State requires a recent score but offers a waiver under specific criteria. Expect strong grades instead: South Carolina, Houston and Fordham ask for a graduate GPA of 3.5 or above.

What the Dissertation Looks Like

Almost every program ends in a dissertation, but the format varies. The traditional dissertation is one long study. A growing number accept or require three publishable papers. Tennessee requires a three-paper dissertation of publishable manuscripts. Oklahoma requires a conceptual article, an empirical article and a practitioner-focused article. Boston University, Simmons and Yeshiva let you choose between the two formats.

The three-paper route matters if you want a faculty job, because hiring committees look at publications. Before the dissertation, you’ll usually pass a qualifying or comprehensive exam. At South Carolina, the dissertation proposal serves as that exam.

UW-Madison Paused for 2026-27; reopens for Fall 2028 entry

What a Social Work PhD Leads to

The PhD is the standard credential for tenure-track social work faculty. In May 2025, BLS counted 12,610 postsecondary social work teachers, with a median annual wage of $77,570. Many schools also hire DSW graduates to teach practice courses, so the PhD’s edge is strongest for research-intensive faculty jobs.

Graduates also work as research scientists in universities, government agencies and large nonprofits, and as policy analysts and evaluation leads. Twelve programs list a policy focus, such as social welfare policy or policy analysis. What a PhD doesn’t do is license you to practice. Clinical licensure comes from your state board and requires supervised practice and an exam. See careers with a social work doctorate for pay by role.

How to Choose a Social Work PhD Program

Use this checklist against each program you’re weighing:

  • Is funding guaranteed or competitive? Tennessee, UNC and Buffalo state packages for their students; Albany’s assistantship is competitive and Howard’s awards are competed for.
  • How many hours does the stipend require? Ten hours a week at Loyola and 20 at Tennessee and Maryland leave very different time for your own research.
  • How many years of support? WashU and Boston University describe up to five years; Loyola waives tuition for three. Compare that with the program’s typical four to five years to finish.
  • Can you move? If not, filter for online, hybrid or low-residency options before anything else.
  • Does the faculty match your topic? Programs list focus areas such as child welfare, aging, health disparities and implementation science. Your advisor matters more than the school’s name.
  • Is it admitting this year? Six programs have paused, and several reopen only in 2027 or 2028.

If you haven’t settled on a PhD over a DSW yet, run the program matcher to see which doctorates fit your goals, schedule and budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Does a PhD in Social Work Take?

Most full-time programs plan on four to five years. Florida State reports a mean time to graduation of 5.5 years over the past ten years, with 4 years the most common result, and the University of Maryland says full-time students average 4 to 5 years. Smith College's low-residency PhD runs 27 months.

Can You Get a Social Work PhD Without an MSW?

Yes, at some schools. Rutgers accepts a master's in a related science field, CUNY lists public administration, criminal justice, psychology and education as acceptable, the University at Albany has applicants without an MSW take two master's-level social work courses first, and UW-Madison runs a PhD-only track.

Is a PhD in Social Work CSWE Accredited?

No. CSWE accredits baccalaureate, master's and practice doctorate programs, and it states that research doctorates are not programmatically accredited across health professions. Judge a PhD by its funding, faculty research and graduate placement instead.

Can You Earn a Social Work PhD Part Time While Working?

Some programs allow it. Widener holds all classes on Fridays in Chester, Pennsylvania. The University of Maryland lets part-time students finish coursework in about 3 to 4 years, with tuition remission but no stipend. Yeshiva's online PhD meets in live evening classes, and most of its students finish in about six years.

How Many Social Work PhDs Are Awarded Each Year?

U.S. schools awarded 666 research doctorates in social work in 2022-23, against 220 practice doctorates such as the DSW, according to federal IPEDS data.

Do You Need a PhD to Become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker?

No. Clinical licensure comes from your state board and requires a social work degree, supervised practice and a passing score on the licensing exam. A PhD adds research training, not a practice license.
